ABOUT

WHY ANOTHER BACH CELLO SUITES RECORDING?
At the time of recording this album there were already well over a hundred printed editions of the Bach Cello Suites. In addition there are almost as many recordings and one would be hard pressed to avoid the question: why another recording?

Peter Martens is one of South Africa’s finest all-round musicians: principal of several of the countries’ foremost orchestras, chamber musician of note, soloist and director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. His collaborations have included concerts with the Brodzky Quartet and Osiris Piano Trio, as well as festivals in Russia, Holland, Austria, Portugal, the UK and the USA.
His first CD on the TwoPianists label – the Complete Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano – won the coveted South African Music Award in 2011 and received rave reviews. This disc also begged the question: why another recording?
It would be foolish to claim any degree of authenticity or supremacy for any modern recording of these works even though both Peter Martens’ Bach and Beethoven recordings take academic scholarship and performance practice into serious account.
The answer is far simpler: for the music captures the imagination, heart and soul of the player, and because it is some of the greatest music ever written for the cello.

Martens brings aristocratic poise, poetry and rhythmic flexibility to the preludes. Martens is playful in the 'galanteries', giving spring to the pairs of menuets in nos.1 and 2, playing the bourrées in mischievous vein (particularly the first of no.4) and injecting the gavottes with a sense of fun.

Martens is a fine player from South Africa who plays these classics (or baroques) of the cello literature with taste and love and a sense of phrasing and voice leading that is satisfying to the ears. He balances his love of Casals’s romantic phrasing with a respect for the simple clarity of the early music players, resulting in a very listenable set of performances.

Bach se ­tjellosuites
Sowat twee jaar gelede het ek die Amerikaanse popmusiek-joernalis Eric Siblin se boek The Cello Suites gelees waarin hy skryf oor sy reise oor die ­wêreld heen om Bach se ­tjello-suites se spoor te volg en die musiek te ontdek.
Hy volg dit van Pablo Casals se ontdekking van dié ses suites tot sy eie reis om van vandag se groot tjelliste se vertolking ­daarvan te hoor.
Die Kaapse tjellis Peter ­Martens het al ’n paar uit­voerings van dié suites plaaslik gelewer, en einde 2012 het hy ’n opname daarvan op die Two­Pianists-etiket uitgereik.
Bach se ses suites vir solo­tjello gryp ’n mens aan oor die eenvoud en intimiteit daarvan, maar dit is terselfdertyd ook virtuoos. (’n Mens kan Siblin se reise om soveel interpretasies moontlik te hoor, verstaan.)
Martens, wat sy interpretasie ’n moderne een noem omdat hy nie op ’n baroktjello speel nie, se vertolking is innig en ­sensitief. Hy trek jou in die ­musiek in, wat op ’n manier met intrige gevul is.

 『演奏者の存在を身近に感じられる録音』を求めて・・・
好録音度:★★★★

1番のプレリュードが1:47という快速演奏にのっけから圧倒されるのですが,全体に速いテンポで駆け抜けていきます。とても意欲的で躍動感にあふれ,ニュアンスに富み細部にまで神経の通った気持ちの良い演奏です。楽器の響かせ方も良く雑味の少ない綺麗なトーンがこれまた素晴らしいです。技術的にも音楽的にも優れる好演奏です。

録音ですが,やや残響を伴っていますが,楽器音を主体にしっかりと捉えているためまずまず良好です。しかしやはり残響のまとわりつきの影響が気になります。音を曇らせるほどではないのが救いです。中低域は充実しており,特に低域がブーミーになることなく良く伸びているのが良いと思います。

マーテンス氏は1971年生まれ,南アフリカ出身のチェリスト。公式Webサイトがあります。最近聴いたモダン楽器に寄る演奏の中ではかなり良く,これは思わぬ掘り出し物でした。
